2006 Pub of the Year

The South East London branch of the Campaign for Real Ale is pleased to announce the 2005 Pub of the Year for the SE London branch area. And the winner is......

The Market Porter, Stoney Street, SE1.

This well-known pub next to Borough Market is famed for its large selection of Ales from around the country. The landlord, Nick Porter, is keeping the quality of the beer consistently high enough to be the voted SE London Pub of the Year by its members. The pub has appeared in the Good Beer Guide 6 times in the last 12 editions, and after a bit of a re-fit to enable more customers to enjoy the ales, it is now very difficult to get standing room in this very popular traditional public house.

When asked for a quote the Chairman of SE London CAMRA, Andrew McGuinness, said

To make this announcement during National Pubs Week is an extra pleasure, so go out and enjoy your local and if that's the Market Porter, what a lucky little imbiber you are.

The presentation took place at the pub on April 11th.

Pub of the Year 2005

After years of being a desert as far as Real Ale is concerned, Peckham has cultivated a real pearl of a pub. “the gowlett se15” on Gowlett Road has just been voted South East London Pub of the Year by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra).

Jonny & Claire Henfrey took on the pub in November 2003 because they had lived in the area for around 7 years and could not find anywhere they really liked to drink - so they gambled everything on making a go of it. Making sure they incorporated exactly what they wanted in a pub they set about making “the gowlett se15” into a community pub where everyone is comfortable. Everything about the pub, from the patio garden to organic wines, baby seats to excellent Real Ales and great home made stone baked pizza. What more could you ask from a local?

When asked by Camra branch chair Roz Cox to describe their bar, Jonny & Claire were in total agreement “the pub is our front room, and we try to ensure all customers are welcomed as guests by the staff, whether it be for a meal with our delicious wines, or quick half and a pit stop!”

The pub then goes forward to the Regional competition.

Deptford Back Street Pub Wins

Camra London Pub of the Year

2004

Ecstatic, elated, euphoric, jubilant, thrilled, tickled pink, there are not enough adjectives to describe how happy we are to bring you the brilliant news that the 2004 LONDON Pub of the Year is THE DOG & BELL in Prince Street, Deptford, SE8 3JD. The presentation took place on Saturday 9th October 2004. The evening  started at 8pm, in the company of family, friends and overjoyed clientele.

Not only are they London Pub of the Year, but also, they are the first pub in SEL to win the Branch award 3 times and to say that the shining lights behind the wheel, Charles & Eileen Gallagher, are delighted is very much an under-statement. They have been there for 16 years and thankfully, have no plans to move on. In this wonderful Free house the beer is perfect, the food delicious, and the selection of Belgian delicacies in the bottled department is an added bonus.

“For South East London to win London Pub of the Year 2 years running (2003 was The Royal Oak in SE1), brings it home to me how lucky we are in this area to have great community pubs like these and we must do everything to protect and support them to make sure they are here for the future generations. They are an important part of our social history and must not be allowed to disappear under the mountain of mega pubs and trendy bars”.

You are always sure of a warm welcome in this little treasure in deepest Deptford.
